Nematode problems on golf courses are common in Florida and the Caribbean due to climate and soil conditions that provide a perfect habitat for many of the parasitic nematode species. The most common genera of sedentary endoparasites on turf in Florida are the root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne). Eectoparasitic nematodes that damage turf in Florida are sting nematode (Belonolaimus), stubby-root nematodes (Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus), and ring nematodes (Mesocriconema).
There are some visible signs of nematode related turf damage, but the only reliable way to determine the population density of plant-parasitic nematodes in the turf grass root system is through soil samples.
There are two treatments to kill golf course nematodes: Soil fumigants and nematicides. A number of different factors affect the performance of these products, including soil temperature soil moisture, organic matter, soil type, and time of application.
